A Festival Celebrating the People, History & Landscape of the Looe Valleys

‘We are all proud of the place we live and want to celebrate it across our community.

‘We Are of This Place is a month-long celebration of people, history and landscape, based around the communities of the East and West Looe Valleys.  There’s something for everyone with walks, markets, films, shows, exhibitions, talks and a rock pool ramble. Many of the events are free or only have a small charge.  Discover something new!

We Are of This Place Poetry Exhibition

Liskeard Library – All Month

Poetry written to the theme of ‘We Are of This Place’ will be exhibited throughout April at Liskeard Library. These are poems which were entered into a poetry competition as part of Simon Armitage’s recent Laureate Library Tour. Poems will be displayed for visitors to the library to read at their leisure and will be there for the whole month of April.

Piskey Path Puppet Show

Liskeard & District Musuem – Monday 7th April at 11am

Mazed Tales will be performing their new puppet show ‘Piskey Path’ on Monday 7th April at 11am in the museum.

The show features two clever puppets; Hunt and Bottrell, the folklore collectors and tells of the Cornish folktales they have collected.

Recommended for children aged 0 to 95.
Entry is FREE and there is no need to pre-book.

Discovering the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site

Liskeard Library, Tuesday 8th April, 10am – 3pm

Come along and learn more about the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. There will be a focus on the Caradon Mining District, an amazing place to explore on Liskeard’s doorstep, and you can discover more about the World Heritage Site as a whole.

Special ‘Live and Later’

Liskeard Library, Thursday 10th April, 7pm

This special edition of Live and Later will see us enjoy an evening of spoken word and poetry written to the theme of ‘We Are of This Place’ with performances of poems which were entered into a poetry competition as part of Simon Armitage’s recent Laureate Library Tour. Poems will be read by the poets themselves.

Illuminating Cornwall’s Lantern Crosses – Talk 

Liskeard Public Hall, Friday 11 April, 2.30pm

Talk for Liskeard Old Cornwall Society ‘Illuminating Cornwall’s Lantern Crosses’ with guest speaker Andrew Langdon. Andrew is the acknowledged expert on Cornish crosses having written several books on the subject and becoming a Bard of Gorsedh Kernow.

Blossom Liskeard

Liskeard – Saturday 12th April

Liskerrett’s Mad Hatter’s at the Local Produce Market 10-1pm.
Fun activities at the Market Canopy including dance, a taster performance by Sterts Youth Theatre and a planting demo from Liskeard in Bloom. Think lots of mad flowery hats and a garland over the canopy. Watch out for making workshops in Liskerrett.

Liskeard Market Markers Arts and Crafts Exhibition at Liskeard Public Hall 12-4pm. with indoor stalls and refreshments at Liskeard Public Hall 12-4pm. The event will feature Floral themed photos, paintings, textile pieces, and crafts.

Honouring Emily Hobhouse

St Ive Church, Saturday 12 April, 11:00–11:45am

Join published author Elsabé Brits for a captivating talk on Emily Hobhouse’s life at St. Ive Church. Free entry, booking recommended. Enjoy a birthday cake competition, unveiling of Emily’s bust, and a kite-flying activity at The Story of Emily.

Pedal. Push. Ride. BHF Fundraiser

Starts and Penhale Pantry near Dobwalls, Sunday 13th April, 10am

This event is a Fundraising 30km bike ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation – Liskeard branch.

Septimus the Seal Talk 

Hannafore Point Hotel Looe, Tuesday 15th April, 6.15pm – 8.30pm

Rob Wells has monitored and recorded seals in St Austell Bay and on the Roseland Peninsula for over ten years, for the Cornwall Seal Research Trust (CSRT). His work has helped to transform what we know about how seals use the south coast of Cornwall.

The life and death of Septimus has contributed to a desire to spread the word about problems in our marine environment.

10.00 to 10.15 Race, walk or drive down lane to the Well
10.15 Renewal of Vows ceremony

Afterwards, Looe Valley Vineyard will be open (free) to visitors.

All welcome, especially any couples wishing to take part in the renewal of vows.

Station Road Stroll

Station Road, Liskeard, Sunday 27th April, 10.30am

A short level stroll along Station Road, Liskeard, stopping regularly to hear about the first occupants of the Victorian terraces that sprang up when the GWR main line station opened in 1859.
