Tree Planting at Highwood
January 14, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Event Navigation
Help us plant British saplings in Cornwall to provide a habitat for local wildlife and sequester carbon dioxide.
Saturday 14th January at 10am to Monday 16th January at 4pm.
Help us plant in Liskeard.
Protect Earth is a reforestation charity that helps plant the right trees in the right place, when government grants fail to help land owners reforest. We work with local climate action groups and volunteers so we can all do this on a shoestring budget, and save the planet a little bit every week.
Thanks to the extremely generous donations of all sizes, Protect Earth is now the proud owner of a historic 64-acre ancient woodland known as High Wood, in Liskeard, Cornwall. High Wood has been woodland consistently since before 1600, and despite being used for commercial timber production for decades, it still retains an impressive amount of biodiversity and wildlife.
High Wood is an integral part of the Liskeard community, a place for serene dog walks, peaceful gatherings, and wildlife spotting, and Protect Earth is happy to say that will not change. Public access will stay a priority. The existing permissive footpaths will continue to be open, and there are plans to try and restore various footpaths connecting to High Wood that have been closed over the decades.
We are going to be planting 1,000 trees of the following species: Oak, Beech, Alder, Aspen, Cornish Elm, Wild Cherry, Wild Service, Goat Willow, Silver Birch, and Rowan.
Things we ask that you bring if possible:
-
A spade – a small border spade or a fencing spade / drainage shovel (which have a narrow/pointed blade) are ideal for tree planting. A large spade is ok, too.
-
Gardening gloves – the sturdier the better
-
Sturdy footwear – preferably boots or wellies
-
Plenty of food and water
-
Hand sanitiser
We’ll send out more information closer to the time about how and where parking works, but we always appreciate anyone who can uses trains/bikes/etc to ease parking, and of course reduce emissions!
