My Fair Lady – Sterts Theatre Company at 7.30 pm
Toasted by some as the ‘perfect musical’ Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s My Fair Lady, was arguably the most influential musicals in the 1950s. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, the musical reflects the appalling inequality which existed, and perhaps still exists, within English society.
Eliza Doolittle, a scruffy cockney flower seller in Covent Garden is transformed into the pride of London society through a wager between Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins and his friend Colonel Pickering. But once the bet is over, what’s to become of a flower girl from the gutter who is too eloquent for her profession, but who also lacks the breeding of the upper classes?
With a book which uses most of Shaw’s original dialogue and a hit filled score including I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face, With a Little Bit of Luck and Get Me To The Church On Time My Fair Lady is one of the greatest musicals of all time, sparkling with biting wit, elegance and a stubborn resistance against romance and sentimentality.
