Liskeard Unlocked – The Great Cornish Emigration – True Stories of Liskeard and District Emigrants

September 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

| Free

As part of Liskeard Unlocked Brian Oldham will be giving a talk ‘The Great Cornish Emigration – True Stories of Liskeard and District Emigrants’ on Thursday 12th September 6pm – 7.30pm at Liskeard Library.

Brian Oldham, President of Liskeard Old Cornwall Society and author of two social history books of Liskeard, will give a presentation of his research into local individuals and over 20 local families who joined what is sometimes referred to as the Cornish Diaspora. Also described as pioneers, they were mainly tin, copper and lead miners in search of silver, gold and diamonds, but there were also farmers, tradesmen, merchants and even newspapermen. Each of the twenty true stories tells of where in East Cornwall they came from and how they coped with life abroad; some met with an early death, while others became Mayor of the township they settled and prospered in.
