Liskeard Unlocked – Crying the Neck

September 14 @ 4:00 pm

| Free

A Crying the Neck Ceremony will be held at the Cattle Market Canopy events area on Saturday 14th September at 4pm.  This event has been organised by the Old Cornwall Society as part of Liskeard Unlocked.

This ancient pagan, but later Christianised, ceremony has been celebrated in Cornish farming communities for many centuries to give thanks at the end of Harvest time. After a prayer and a reading the last cut of corn (the neck) is raised amid set shouts and responses, all in both the Cornish and English languages.

Visitors will be given the responses in both languages so they can join in as the neck is raised towards the North, East and South (never to the West as this could result in a poor Harvest the following year). Assisted by a local choir a rousing rendition of Trelawny will be sung to end the occasion, which is held by 40+ Old Cornwall Societies across the County.

ACCESSIBILITY

  • Full wheelchair access

This event will be followed by ‘A Taste of Ukraine – Connecting with Kopychyntsi’ at the Public Hall.
