The Story of Endsleigh House 1809-14 (morning).
Followed by a Visit to the House and Grounds (afternoon).
A day of contrast. In the morning, at Liskeard Public Hall, Keir Davidson introduces us to Georgina Russell, Duchess of Bedford, and Endsleigh House, built for her and the Duke early in the 19th Century, in a “picturesque” style, with a Scottish architectural flavour. Humphrey Repton was commissioned to landscape the gardens, having made a considerable reputation with his work locally – Anthony House, Port Eliot, and Pentillie Castle.
In the afternoon, we visit Endsleigh House to see for ourselves what he achieved, under the expert guidance of Keir, who is the author of a major study on Repton’s labours in the Tamar Valley. Afterwards, we have an opportunity to take tea at Endsleigh, now an elegant luxury hotel, restored and refurbished by Olga Polizzi of Tresanton (St Mawes) fame.
